I would say "I went to Italian classes at University for five years recently." The classes all consisted of individual lessons spread out over the five years, but I wouldn't say "I went to Italian lessons for five years".

The point is that after reading the whole post I stumm don't know what is the meaning of the sentence. Although there were quite a few people more info posting about the doubt between "dig in" or "digging", etc, etc, I guess that we, non natives tonlos don't have a clue of what the Wahrhaft meaning is.
